A laptop that shows nothing when you press the power button is one of the most common reasons people walk into the workshop. Often the fix takes a minute and no tools. Work through this list before you decide it is dead.
1. Rule out the charger
Plug the charger into a socket you know works, then check the light on the charger brick and the charging light on the laptop. No light on either usually means the charger or its cable has failed, not the laptop. Try a second charger with the same voltage and connector if you can borrow one. Look at the cable where it enters the plug and the brick, since that is where they break.
2. Do a hard reset
Unplug the charger. If the battery comes out, take it out. Hold the power button down for a full 30 seconds, then put the battery back, plug the charger in and press the power button once. This clears a stuck power state, which is the cause more often than people expect.
3. Listen and look
Press power and put your ear near the keyboard. A fan spinning or a soft click means the board has power and the problem is likely the screen or the memory. Shine a torch on the screen at an angle. If you can make out a faint image, the backlight has failed and the laptop is otherwise fine.
4. Try an external screen
Connect a TV or monitor with an HDMI cable and press the display key on the keyboard (usually a function key with a screen icon). If the picture appears on the external screen, the laptop works and it is the panel, the hinge cable or the backlight that needs attention.
5. Reseat the memory
Only do this if you are comfortable opening the back cover and the laptop is out of warranty. With the charger and battery disconnected, press the clips on each side of the memory module, take it out, and push it back in until the clips snap. A module that has worked loose stops the laptop from starting at all.
When to bring it in
If the charger light is on, the hard reset did nothing and there is no sound or image at all, the fault is on the motherboard: usually the charging circuit or a power chip. That is a bench repair. Bring the laptop and its charger to the workshop, or send us the model and what you have tried on WhatsApp, and you will get a diagnosis and a price before any work starts. Do not keep trying random chargers, since a wrong voltage can turn a cheap repair into an expensive one.
